Quilting with Margo Ellis: Quilted Backpack

Join quilt artist and instructor Margo Ellis for a four-week workshop as you create a quilted backpack in your choice of three sizes. Each fully lined bag features three front pockets, an inside zipper pocket, and a handle for carrying as a purse. Choose a small size for an everyday purse, medium for day trips, or large for weekends away. Basic sewing skills are required; quilting experience and familiarity with using a rotary cutter are helpful.

Supply List

  • Five fat quarters OR three ½-yard pieces of fabric; if using one color, bring 1½ yards. Heavier fabric, such as Sunbrella or midweight upholstery fabric, may also be used for the outer bag.

  • ½ yard of lining fabric

  • ½ yard of batting (large scraps are fine; Margo will also have batting available)

  • 1½ yards of 1-inch webbing for straps

  • 8-inch zipper

  • Coordinating thread

  • Button for closure

  • Cording for drawstring (Margo will have cord locks available)

  • Pattern: $7, ordered by Margo

Optional Supplies

  • Magnetic closure

  • D-rings and swivel hooks

  • Zipper for purse-style bags

Hooks, buckles, D-rings, and a magnetic closure are available from Margo for $7.

Classes meet 12:30PM to 3:30PM on Tuesdays beginning September 15th until October 6th, 2026.

Workshop Price: $140

Notes:

The Seam Shoppe is the only fabric store in town and their staff is very helpful. Look at the samples in the store of color ideas. They offer a 10% discount to my students.
